British Steel rescue deal at risk of collapse sparking fears for 25,000 jobs


A rescue deal for British Steel is at risk of collapse, putting 25,000 jobs in jeopardy.

The site in Scunthorpe went into receivership in May and is reportedly losing £1million a day.

Officials have been in talks with a potential buyer, Chinese firm Jingye Group, but the deal is in trouble, it was claimed today,

Some 4,000 people work at the Scunthorpe plant, with another 21,000 working in the supply chain.

The collapse of the sale would cause issues for PM Boris Johnson in one of the former Labour heartlands that switched to the Tories at last week’s general election .

Shadow Steel Minister Gill Furniss said: “The Prime Minister said that he would repay the trust put into him by northern towns.

“Now is the time to do just that and save British Steel in Scunthorpe.”
