British Soap Awards viewers shocked as Hollyoaks takes home Best Soap


The Hollyoaks cast were overjoyed as they took a number of the top gongs at the British Soap Awards 2019 – including Best Soap and Best Actor for Gregory Finnegan (James Nightingale).

Hollyoaks also took home Villain of the Year for Nathan Sussex (Buster Smith) as well as Best Male Dramatic Performance for Adam Woodward (Brody Hudson).

Some viewers were shocked at the result, with one exclaiming: “Oh wow was not expecting that, well done Hollyoaks.”

While another asked: “Beg your pardon? Hollyoaks won Best Soap???”

However, others were overjoyed, with one fan commenting: “I am so over the moon for Hollyoaks! Definitely the best soap on TV!”

Another added: “So pleased Hollyoaks has won so many awards tonight and now to win best soap. Their faces were a picture.”

Coronation Street also had a good night, with the cast taking home five awards.

Shayne Ward won two awards for his portrayal of Aidan Connor, who committed suicide.

He picked up Best Single Episode for this, as well as Best Storyline.

Corrie also won Scene of the Year for Gail Platt’s monologue, and Alexandra Mardell (Emma Brooker) picked up Best Newcomer.

Meanwhile, Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts) was given an Outstanding Achievement Award. 

Youngster Kara-Leah Fernandes (Bailey Baker) was the stand-out star for EastEnders, being crowned with Best Young Performance and Best On-Screen Partnership with Roger Griffiths (Mitch Baker).

Meanwhile, for Emmerdale, Lucy Pargeter (Chas Dingle) won Best Actress.

Assistant Director Val Lawson was also given The Tony Warren Awards (Off-Screen).

As well as winning the top gongs, the Hollyoaks ladies also stole the show on the red carpet.

Stephanie Davis, who plays Sinead O’Connor dazzled in a plunging floral gown.

Meanwhile Nadine Mulkerrin, 25, who plays Cleo McQueen, announced she was pregnant with the baby of co-star Rory Douglas-Speed (Joel Dexter) shortly before the awards took place.
