British Airways: How ONE trick helps cabin crew prevent food poisoning on flights

According to an air stewardess in the Channel 5 documentary ‘First Class vs Economy: Is it Worth It?’, cabin crew use a little stick that works “as if by magic”. The neat device is stuck into the food and the end changes colour if the meal has been cooked correctly at the right temperature. Ex-Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay (Shelley Unwin) spoke to the BA stewardess about the food.

She told her: “Long-haul economy customers get a precooked meal that is then reheated in an oven just like ready-meals at home.

“Meals must be temperature-checked as 154 passengers with food poisoning is far from ideal at 30,000 feet.

“It’s a very clear device and what it actually does it, it will show you if the meals are cooked correctly or not.

“We leave it just a few minutes and, as if by magic, if the food is cooked correctly at the right temperature, the little end part will have turned black.”

The air stewardess added that meat is positioned at the bottom of the oven, while fish and vegetarian options are are the top so the food is cooked evenly.

Ms Lindsay, who presented the documentary with fellow actor Nigel Havers (Lewis Archer in Coronation Street), delved into the secrets of flying on British Airways.

The pair completed cabin-crew training and then boarded a transatlantic flight from Heathrow to Washington.

Other interesting in-flight food insights include what the cabin crew need to know about allergies.

All flight crew must know every meal’s ingredients, because a passenger having an allergic reaction would not only be dangerous for them, but could mean a costly emergency landing.

The air stewardess showed Ms Lindsay her “Chef’s chat”, which is a card that shows the ingredients of the food and highlights any allergens within it.

BA has around 45,000 staff members around the globe, including 16,500 cabin crew and 3,900 pilots.

It is the second largest airline in the UK based on fleet size and passengers carried, the largest being easyJet.

The airline is based at Waterside, Harmondsworth, near London Heathrow Airport.
