The hotel chain, which has 61 hotels in the UK, had a customer score of just 39 per cent, according to the Which? report.

Britannia guests also regularly faced problems during their stay, with nearly half (44 per cent) having an issue.

One customer claimed they found a “filthy bathroom with used toiletries stuffed behind the curtain” while others slammed the food which was “tough and inedible”.

Which? went undercover at Britannia’s affordable airport hotel, Gatwick Lodge.

After checking in, they found stained bed-sheets, dirty tissues in the bin and grime on the skirting boards.

The window paint was also peeling and filthy, and found the bath to have mould around the edges.

They also claimed the room smelt of damp, with the ventilation fan clogged with dust and dead bugs.

An ultraviolet light showed up stains on the bed sheets as well as around the toilet.

Rory Boland, Which? Travel Editor, said: “There really is no excuse for the grubby bathtubs and filthy rooms that we have seen year after year with Britannia so it is best to avoid them completely and go almost anywhere else.”

EasyHotel was also rated poorly, receiving just 58 per cent in customer satisfaction, followed by Ibis Budget (60 per cent) and Mercure (62 per cent).

The value for money was also a contender.

However, the best hotel chain in the UK was Wetherspoon Hotel, receiving 79 per cent customer score.

This was joint first with Premier Inn, who have won for the past four years.

Wetherspoon, which received top marks for the first time this year, won praise from guests for its “value for money” and “huge rooms”.
