Diefer has been named Britain’s loneliest dog after waiting nearly 500 days to find a loving home.
Terrier cross Diefer arrived at an RSPCA centre in Sheffield back in December 2018 after his owner died. It’s since been 437 days without finding a forever home, and he’s spent two Christmases alone at the animal centre.
Diefer was very anxious when he first arrived at the shelter and has needed special attention to help him relax and enjoy himself.
He’s become much calmer and more confident since being given scent work to do and destruction boxes to play with.
Hayley Crookes, the Animal Care Lead at RSPCA Sheffield Animal Centre, said: ‘We are heartbroken the lovely Diefer hasn’t found his forever home yet.
‘He has been so close but sadly it has fallen through when someone showed an interest in him.
‘He has waited 437 long days since his owner passed away to find a new home.
‘We’re not sure why as he is a very friendly dog who deserves a home to call his own.’
Nine-year-old Diefer is super affectionate and loves cuddles and kisses. He loves being out and about and has been trained to wear a muzzle when out for walks.
He misses being a companion to someone who has plenty of time to spend with him, and would like to be in a home where he’s the only dog so he can have plenty of attention.
His ideal owner would be someone experienced with terriers or other dogs with active lifestyles, who can dedicate plenty of time to taking him on long walks.
Diefer will need an adult-only home with no other pets.
Hayley says: ‘He would suit experienced owners who have an active lifestyle with lots of time to spend helping Diefer develop his education and training further.
‘He goes for lovely leisurely walks and loves to see the sights and take in the world.
‘We have shown him some fun ways to channel his energy by doing things like scent work.
‘We have also helped him tweak his manners, he will now happily swap his toys for another or something equally as fun.
‘Once he is comfortable with you, he is an absolute diamond.
‘His favourite people get cuddles and kisses by the bucket load and he really does enjoy human company.
‘He has such an affectionate side to him as well as a cheeky side to his personality which we just find very charming.’
