Wellness products and treatments using Cannabidiol, or CBD, have turned from novelties into must-have fixes — fuelling a market now worth £300million a year.

Unlike cannabis ingredient THC, which makes users high, CBD has no psychoactive effect. Instead, it is used by people who want to manage conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy and post-traumatic stress disorder. The substance is also being trialled to see if it can help with anxiety and arthritis.
It comes in sweets, creams, capsules, bath bombs and infused into pillowcases — and an estimated 1.3million Brits use it.
Experts say the UK market will be worth £1billion by 2025, with backing from the likes of Kim Kardashian, Liv Tyler, Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow. And that means a whole lot of new jobs.
he industry is tightly regulated but CBD lawyer Nichola Craven says: “CBD products are one of the UK’s fastest-growing consumer markets, with a flourishing jobs growth — from roles in manufacturing to sales and lab analysis.”
JOBS GROWTH
UK employment sites currently list more than 1,000 CBD-related roles, from specialist beauty therapists, to copywriters with CBD knowledge, shop staff and sales managers. Salaries range from £15,000 to six figures.
While most CBD firms are independent, there is growing interest from major cosmetic, food and healthcare brands — which promises yet more jobs in the next few years.
As the regulations are tightened there will also be more legal jobs available.
‘So much opportunity’
SOPHIA ALI was one of the first to launch a CBD company in the UK. Now five years on, AmmaLife.co.uk is on track to turn over £1million this year.
Sophia, 43, from Bristol, says: “I was working at the local council but wanted to find inspiration to set up a business with my partner.
“I have always been passionate about health and empowering people. So when I came across the burgeoning medical marijuana movement in the US and realised we could legally market it in the UK, it was fantastic.
“When we first started Amma Life it was impossible to even obtain a payment option for customers on our website as payment providers refused to work with CBD companies.
“Now things are changing fast as firms begin to realise the value of the market. This is an exciting industry to be a part of as there is so much opportunity in how we can influence and shape the UK market.
“There is so much opportunity for jobs growth from medical and legal specialists to digital marketers and scientists.”
Halfords cares
HALFORDS has guaranteed interviews for all staff of stricken baby goods retailer Mothercare. The bike and motoring supplies chain has 215 vacancies across its stores.

If staff get too steamy

- RELATIONSHIPS at work are a legal minefield and employers need policies in place to avoid costly claims. Without a policy setting out what the firm expects, the mere fact of a workplace relationship is not normally a reason to discipline staff.
- A POLICY that requires employees to disclose any close personal relationships means employers can review a situation and consider if it will interfere with work or lead to complaints from other staff. If one employee manages their romantic partner, other staff might complain of favouritism affecting team morale.
- EMPLOYERS must find the right balance because imposing a complete ban on at-work relationships could be an infringement of employees’ rights under the Human Rights Act 1998.
- FIRMS should also consider what happens if a work relationship ends badly. These could lead to sexual harassment claims being brought by one employee against their ex.
- ANY relationship policy must work alongside other relevant policies, such as equal opportunity, anti-harassment and bullying polices.
