Britain will make fast-tacking US deal number one Brexit priority, vows new Trade Secretary Liz Truss

BRITAIN will make a trade deal with the US our “top priority”, new Trade Secretary Liz Truss has vowed.

She met yesterday with the US ambassador Woody Johnson at Winfield House to discuss how to fast-track trade talks.

And today she promised to make it the most important deal during her time in office.

The news comes after Donald Trump vowed to boost trade between the UK and the US by “four or five times” after a deal is done in a Brexit bonanda.

Ms Truss said: “Negotiating and signing exciting new free trade agreements is my top priority – and none are more important than with the United States. This deal has the potential to deliver new markets for great British products and services and lower prices and more choices for British shoppers.

“We are fast-tracking these deals, and making sure British businesses are ready to trade so they can take advantage of the golden opportunities ahead.”

The President and new PM Boris Johnson have vowed to work to thrash out a huge new economic relationship between our two countries, the White House said last night.

They spoke on Friday – two days after Boris took over at Number 10 following his Conservative Party leadership election victory.

President Trump’s press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement on Monday: “President Donald J. Trump spoke with Prime Minister Boris Johnson last Friday in their first official communication since the Prime Minister took office.

“They discussed the importance of continuing to strengthen the special relationship between the United States and United Kingdom.

“Specifically, they agreed to immediately deepen and expand the bilateral economic relationship upon the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union.”

The statement mirrors how Downing Street described the leaders’ warm chat on Friday.

The chummy pair have met previously when Boris was Foreign Secretary.

They also talked multiple times over the last month during Boris’ successful leadership run.

It’s expected that the new PM will make visiting his friend in the US one of his top priorities to kick-start talks for a bumper trade deal.

Last week, US Ambassador Woody Johnson said Trump and Johnson will have a “sensational” relationship.
