Jack Whitehall hosted the Brit Awards for the third year in a row, and he used his first joke to roast prime minister Boris Johnson.

Taking to the stage for the 40th annual Brits, Jack told the crowds: ‘Welcome to the 40th anniversary of the Brit Awards in association with Mastercard.

‘Yes, it’s the one night of the year you get to see your popstars in a different light, sat there nervously waiting for an envelope to appear like Boris Johnson on Father’s Day.’

Fans were quick to spot the early political joke, taking to Twitter to express their views.

Some found the ribbing hilarious, tweeting: ‘Did he say like Boris Johnson on father’s day im screamienzka’ (sic) and ‘oooooohhh, Whitehall’s already dissed Boris, yer Coldplay man, & a One Direction lad, nice #BRITs’.

Others added: ‘I don’t usually like Jack Whitehall but that Boris Johnson joke tickled me’ and ‘BORIS JOHNSON ON FATHERS DAY LMFAOOO’.

Others predicted that there would be political jokes on stage, writing: ‘Jack Whitehall’s got his anti-Boris joke in early there’ and ‘How long will it take someone at the brits to mention Boris ok 5 minutes so boring and predictable @jackwhitehall’.

Shortly after his joke at Boris Johnson’s expense, Jack also paid a touching tribute to Caroline Flack, after the presenter died aged 40.

He took a moment to remember the much-loved presenter who took her own life on 15 February.

‘Before our next performance, over the weekend we learned some awful news that one of the Brits family and our friend Caroline Flack tragically passed away.

‘She was a kind and vibrant person with an infectious sense of fun and will be sorely missed. ‘I am sure I speak for everyone here when I say our thoughts are with her friends and family.’
