Boris Johnson has been plunged into a weak minority government after 21 Tory MPs chose to lose the whip rather than back him on Brexit .
No10 confirmed the rebels – including veteran Ken Clarke, ex-Chancellor Philip Hammond and Winston Churchill’s grandson – would be purged from the party tonight after a historic showdown over no-deal.
MPs voted 328-301 to take control of the Commons order paper, the first step to blocking a no-deal Brexit on October 31.
Eventually it is likely to lead to MPs passing a Bill that will delay Brexit by three months – if Parliament hasn’t voted for either a deal or no-deal by October 19.
It may only have been the first step, but Boris Johnson reacted with fury. Not only did he purge the rebels, landing himself with a minus-43 majority, he also announced plans to vote on holding a general election.
