Brexit Party’s Tice prepares Peterborough result legal challenge – ‘It’s about trust’

Mr Tice also said a major overhaul of the postal vote system was required in order to prevent electoral fraud. In a press coference on Monday, claimed to have evidence proving a “convicted fraudster” was working as an agent for the Labour Party, understood to be a reference to , who was jailed for fraud for 15 months in 2008 and who was pictured with Ms Forbes and . Labour has dismissed the claim as “nonsense” but Mr Tice told Express.co.uk the election result had been “tainted” by the corruption allegations.

He said: “We have to be able to trust in our voting system.”

Labour’s Lisa Forbes beat Brexit Party’s by 683 votes in the election on June 6. Police have been investigating a total of three fraud claims.

Pointing to the Tower Hamlets election fraud probe centring on the election of Mayor Lutfur Rahman in 2014, Mr Tice added: “Point is this is about trust in democracy.”

He was particularly concerned about the potential misuse of the postal votes system, which Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage has already criticised.

Mr Tice said: “The Government has failed to progress the clear recommendations of the Eric Pickles review in 2016, which highlighted numerous flaws.”

Cambridgeshire Police are investigate two allegations – one of a breach of the privacy of the vote and another relating to claims that ballot papers were burned.

However, police has said no offences were found over allegations of bribery relating to postal votes.

At a press conference earlier this week, Mr Tice said: “How much did , the elected MP, know that she had a convicted electoral fraudster in her team who would count as an agent?”

Addressing the issue of postal votes, Mr Farage said: “It’s about a system that is wide open to corruption, to intimidation, to bribery, to abuse on a whole number of levels.

“If you say it’s sour grapes, you can say it, but actually it is time for change and my ambition would be that by the next general election to get rid of the current postal vote system.”

Wheelchair users and overseas service personnel are among those suggested should be entitled to postal votes.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Mr Tice confirmed his party would be lodging a petition under the Representation of the People Act 1983.

Labour has previously denied that Mr Mahmood was involved in Labour’s campaign.

A party spokesperson told the Peterborough Telegraph: “Peterborough council, who organise the count, always announce the results in a public area of the venue.

“There were hundreds of people there. The Labour Party had 19 official guests who were allowed in to the restricted areas. He was not one of them.”

Express.co.uk has contacted Labour for further comment.
