The key ally of Jeremy Corbyn made the controversial comments at a ‘Love Socialism’ meeting alongside shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry. As Ms Buter stands and tells guests that she does not believe people who like Brexit are normal, Ms Thornberry can be seen chuckling in a video posted on social media. Ms Butler said: “I think if anyone doesn’t hate Brexit, even if you voted for it, there’s something wrong with you.”
Laughter can be heard from guests in the committee room in Parliament where the gathering was held.
The footage was shared on Twitter by the Conservative Party press office, with the message: “Corbyn’s shadow cabinet member touring TV studios claiming Labour will abide by result of 2nd referendum (after ignoring 1st) – but here’s what they really think.”
Some Twitter users took issue with Ms Thornberry’s laugh and branded her “smug”.
Another person said Ms Butler’s comments proved she was “really out of touch with the people” of Britain.
One person said, “Yes of course there’s something wrong with us Leavers” and added that they couldn’t wait to see Labour “lose a shed load of seats” on December 12.
Another added: “Labour don’t care about anybody but themselves, a party of one not all. Thank God half of them will be gone by December 13.”
But one person said Ms Butler had made an “accurate observation” because “both Leavers and Remainers have had it up to here with Brexit”.
Labour has been criticised for failing to give clear answers on its Brexit policy over the past few months.
Mr Corbyn has said if he gets into Number 10 he will negotiate another deal with the EU and put it to voters with the option to Remain in a second ballot.
