Brexit ‘DEATH zone’: Tory MPs to ‘QUIT’ if Boris Johnson becomes Prime Minister

Former foreign secretary, Mr Johnson, is a firm favourite to replace Theresa May as leader of the Conservative party. But Prisons Minister, Rory Stewart, has suggested he would quit if Mr Johnson became leader, according to The Sun. Mr Stewart told the BBC: “I would find that difficult if he were campaigning for a No Deal Brexit.

“Becoming a hard Brexit party isn’t just about Brexit, it carries with it a whole series of statements about polarising extreme right-wing politics.

“I’d find it very difficult to stay, I’d have to look at what he was doing.

“The important thing is to have moral principles and for me the red line is campaigning for a No Deal Brexit.”

Dominic Grieve also said he would resign if Mr Johnson becomes leader.

The news comes after Mrs May is likely to suffer heavy losses in the local elections this Thursday.

Sources inside Parliament have called the three weeks between local polls and the European Parliament elections the “death zone”, the Mail on Sunday reported.

They reported the time will be used to work out a Brexit compromise with Labour.

The expectation is to get the UK out of EU before the European elections in May.

The cross-party negotiations follow backlash from the newly-formed Brexit party which Tory MPs have considered defecting to.

A reported has claimed a source close to Nigel Farage said the Brexit Party leader was “100 percent sure that there is at least one high-profile defection in the pipeline”.

According to leaked messages from a private group of Tory backbenchers on the WhatsApp messaging system, one prominent Brexiteer MP said: “Maybe we should all just defect to the Brexit Party. Can you imagine the chaos?”

However Nigel Evans, a joint executive-secretary of the 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers, said he was not aware of any colleague plotting to defect to the Brexit Party but warned any Tories switching would ultimately help Labour.
