She is expected to give Parliament the opportunity to vote again in the hope of finally delivering the UK’s departure from the EU amid the Tory Party crisis. The speech title, ‘A new Brexit deal – seeking common ground in Parliamen’, has been leaked to the press. The difference between her new agreement and her previous one, which attempted to shackle the UK to the EU’s customs union, single market and failed to provide assurances one the need for a contested Irish backstop to be used, is yet to be made clear.
Mrs May’s speech is unsurprisingly timely, with Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage soaring in popularity in the early EU election opinion polls, with his intervention into the Brexit process resulting in members of the spirit Tory Party jumping ship to his new party due to failed promises over Brexit by the Conservatives.
Current polls ahead of Thursday’s EU election ballot showed the Brexit Party has more public backing than the Conservatives and Labour combined.
Mrs May has also been ordered by the 1922 Committee to stand down should the June say on her deal – the fourth meaningful vote – see her fail to gather support from MPs.
