Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers hopes James Maddison will follow his lead by signing a new deal at the club.

The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be confident of signing the England international next summer.

Maddison has spoken to former team-mate Harry Maguire about a move to Old Trafford and grew up as a United fan in his childhood.

But Leicester are currently on an upward trajectory and nothing crystallises that more than Rodgers’ decision to reject a move to Arsenal by signing a new long-term deal at the King Power Stadium.

The former Celtic boss was handed a new long-term deal in order to remove a release clause in which the Foxes feared would enable the Gunners to appoint Rodgers.

And, after signing a new deal worth around £40m, Rodgers has urged the likes of Maddison to do the same.

Asked about players like Maddison contemplating their futures, Rodgers replied: ‘Hopefully they’ll see how we’ve worked together here and the ambition I have for the club, will make them think in terms of where we want to go.

‘This is a club with big ambition, that’s why I’ve committed for such a long period, and once they’re here, they will hopefully feel that ambition and see the progress.’

Rodgers’ decision is a blow to Arsenal, who are running out of options following Massimiliano Allegri admission that he wants to wait until next summer before returning to management.

Mauricio Pochettino has refused to rule out a move to the Gunners following his exit from rivals Tottenham, while Mikel Arteta remains a candidate.
