Complete with its very own great hall, sweeping staircases, a dungeon and roof-top walkway, the castle interiors balance five centuries of history with modern comfort.

Mary Queen of Scots famously spent her last night at Fa’side castle before riding to the Battle of Carbury on the morning of 15 June 1567.

She is said to have changed out of her lavish clothes into a short skirt before the journey, leaving her jewels and belongings stowed in a chest at the castle.

The ill-fated queen was imprisoned in Loch Leven after just two days but later escaped to 20 years of exile in France.

And while Fa’side castle had fallen into rack and ruin by the 20th century, extensive renovations in the 1980s transformed the castle into a spectacular home.

Many of the building’s historic features remain including barrel-vaulted ceilings, stone fireplaces, and the great hall’s painted ceiling.

Savills’ Jamie Macnab described the castle’s great hall.

“This magnificent old room has an original stone built fireplace with a log burning stove. Beside the window there are stone window seats built into the thick castle walls,” he said.

“There is a painted ceiling and also on the ceiling there are some of the original corbels exposed from when the castle was destroyed by a fire before the Battle of Pinkie.

As well as the great hall, the castle features six grand bedrooms, three bathrooms and five living rooms – all across four floors.

“Features include a beech hedge and woodland providing privacy.

“The castle lies in a very private rural location amidst rolling farmland.”

The castle’s impressive white stone exterior and soaring turrets look out to the Lammermuir hills.
Fa’side is being sold after its current owner Ian Brash stole over £350,000 from a medical charity.
