Brad Pitt looks set to have one heck of a 2019 as the first trailer for space thriller Ad Astra drops, weeks after the critical acclaim of his starring role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Ad Astra follows Pitt’s astronaut Roy McBride whose father went missing during a space mission 16 years prior while looking for alien life.

But now Earth is suffering from something being called ‘the surge’, and it is thought McBride’s father – played by Tommy Lee Jones – may be to blame, leading to what looks like a race against time action adventure set across the solar system.

The film was originally set for release in January but has had two shifts since then, and will now release in the UK on 18 SAeptember, teo days ahead of the US.

But that extra time may have paid off; directed by James Gray, who Pitt worked with on The Lost City Of Z, the first trailer looks stunning if not a little reminiscent of Interstellar (hello daddy issues and the work of cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema).

But it’s the draw of Pitt that will get bums on seats for this one, after a string of disappointing box office hits.

Reviews from Cannes Film Festival for Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film however – and Brad’s first starring role in a big screen movie cince 2016’s Allied – were overwhelmingly positive, with multiple five-star ratings being doled out.

The Pitt and Leonardo Di Caprio led vehicle has been called ‘the most fun Tarantino has had in years’ by Vulture, ‘dazzling’ by the Guardian, and ‘gloriously, wickedly indulgent, compelling and hilarious’ by Deadline.

Following the screening in Cannes – the hottest ticket of the festival – Tarantino, Di Caprio, Pitt and Margot Robbie, who plays Sharon Tate, received a six minute standing ovation.
