Boxing news: Savannah Marshall claims she knows secret to beating golden girl Claressa Shields

Former GB amateur star Savannah Marshall claims she can repeat her win over US golden girl Claressa Shields.

Marshall, 27, handed Shields the only loss of her glittering career when she beat her en route to becoming Britain’s first female amateur world champion in China in 2012.

The unbeaten Hartlepool fighter has the fifth fight of her pro career on May 25 in Manchester and is gunning for a rematch with unified middleweight champion Shields.

“So far I’m the only one in the world who knows the secret to beating Claressa Shields,” said Marshall, who is trained and managed by Peter Fury.

“It was under the old scoring system of a point for a punch and I beat her very clearly.

“If, and when, the rematch happens again, I know I can win again. I’m very confident in my ability.”

Marshall is rising through the ranks at a time when boxing is thriving in the UK, with Katie Taylor already a huge name and fellow female stars such as Nicola Adams, Shannon Courtenay and more making an impact.

But Marshall reckons her size and explosive power can set her apart and see her rise to the top of the pack.

“Being at the top end of woman’s weights, sets me aside from the other British girls,” she states.

“All the big girls can punch hard. I’ve always been told I’m heavy handed but Peter (Fury) has added explosive power – and I do enjoy delivering a chilling knockout!”

Marshall moved to 6-0 with another knockout win last week against experienced Bulgarian Borislava Goranova – and she’s now looking to keep busy with a view to world title fights around the corner.

She added: “I just need to keep active, be involved in more 10 rounders and acquire the experience of fighting before thousands on big shows. By the end of this year, I’d hope to be 10 and 0 and knocking on the door for a world title, either at super-middle, or at middle against Claressa.

“I intend unifying the world titles at both weights, no particular order, then walking away from boxing with my head held high, no regrets.”
