Bottle of whisky from closed Scottish distillery tops £54,000 at auction



A rare bottle of Brora single malt whisky has been sold for £54,450, a world record price for a single bottle from the now closed distillery in Sutherland. 

The 40-year-old whisky, one of just 160 bottles produced in the batch, was sold to an unknown bidder at Sotheby’s in London.

Brora was closed in 1983 but is set to reopen next year after a brick-by-brick restoration over three years by owner Diageo .

 

Whisky distilled before Brora’s closure in 1983 is often highly prized by global collectors and aficionados where bottles are reaching top prices at auctions around the world.

Sotheby’s whisky expert Jonny Fowle said: “With the 200th anniversary of Brora celebrated this year, and the distillery’s opening next year, I have seen significant interest in Brora from collectors around the world as we look ahead to an exciting time for the distillery.”

James Mackay, head of rare & collectible spirits at Diageo, said: “For many, Brora is considered a masterpiece of the whisky world due to the quality of its liquid and its extremely rare status. The distillery will enter a new era from next year when Brora’s historic stills will once again create spirit.”

 

The auction also saw a world record £1.5m achieved for a single bottle.

The Macallan 1926 60-year-old single malt from cask number 263 had been estimated to sell for between £350,000 and £450,000.The previous auction record for a single bottle of Scotch was £1.2m, set by another bottle from the same cask in November last year.
