Borussia Dortmund boss admits Man Utd transfer talk has affected Jadon Sancho

Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre has admitted Jadon Sancho’s long-running Man Utd transfer saga may be the cause behind the winger’s recent dip in form.

United targeted a move for Sancho all summer but left it late to lodge a bid which fell below Dortmund’s valuation and way beyond their August 10 deadline.

The Bundesliga club remained adamant throughout negotiations they would not accept anything lower than their £108million asking price and would not be forced into selling their star man.

However, despite being successful in keeping Sancho at the club, Favre feels the speculation has unsettled his player.

Asked about the 20-year-old’s form, Favre said: “Every player has slow periods. There was a lot of talk about Jadon during the summer – something like that can be a factor.”

Sancho has scored just once in six matches for Dortmund so far this season, with his only strike coming in the German Cup hammering of Duisberg.

The youngster also failed to make an impact on international duty with England, having joined up with the squad late after breaching coronavirus restrictions by attending a party in the days leading up to their October fixtures.

Dortmund have still managed to win four of their opening five Bundesliga matches, though were on the receiving end of a 3-1 defeat to Lazio in the first Champions League group tie last week.

Manchester United are looking to plot their path back to the top.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have missed out on Jadon Sancho in the summer, but he still made some big moves in the transfer market with Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani all arriving.

But their start to the season has been a mixed bag, with a home defeat to Crystal Palace and a 6-1 thrashing by Spurs at one end of the scale, and a tremendous 2-1 win over PSG in Paris at the other.

The question now is whether they can find the right balance?

They now welcome Russian champions Zenit St.Petersburg to Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday, but Favre does not want to put any pressure on Sancho to perform.

“No player is consistently in top form for an entire year, that’s impossible. You have to accept that,” added the Dortmund boss.

While talk of Sancho heading to Old Trafford has simmered down since the transfer window shut, the links with United have showed no signs of going away completely.

Indeed, according to a report from The Athletic , United remain confident they can prise Sancho from Dortmund in the near future with the winger still their No.1 target.

It’s not just Sancho who United are keen on either, though, as the Red Devils are plotting a renewed attempt at landing Erling Haaland’s signature in 2022.

The Norwegian striker snubbed a switch to United to further his development in Germany but has hinted Dortmund are acting as a stepping stone in his career.

United are now hopeful of bringing Haaland to the Premier League when his £68million release clause becomes active in two years’ time.
