Addressing a bird-watching conference in Rutland, East Midlands, she will call on all to do their bit to tackle the scourge of plastics that kills a million sea birds a year.

She is also expected to take aim against big game trophy hunters, a regular target of her tweets.

Friends of Carrie – a senior adviser at US-based environmental campaign group Oceana – claim she is “very nervous” about the speech.

But she decided to use the platform to put her new public persona as Boris’s partner in No10 to use.

Ms Symonds will give a five-minute speech at the Birdfair bird-watching conference, at Rutland Water Nature Reserve.

She will then appear on a Question Time-style panel alongside guests including BBC SpringWatch presenter Chris Packham.

Birdfair founder Tim Appleton said: “We’re absolutely over the moon that Carrie is supporting us and we hope she will continue supporting us and conservation for many years to come.”

There are an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean.

Of that mass, 269,000 tonnes float on the surface.
