Boris Johnson vows to shake up UK immigration and implement Australian style points system

The former Foreign Secretary’s plans to restore “public faith” with the new immigration system, The Daily Telegraph reported. Mr Johnson’s system will mean any foreigners who want to work in Britain have to be able to speak English and have a job before they arrive. He added foreign workers will not be allowed to “cut ahead in the queue”.

Mr Johnson told The Daily Telegraph: “We will restore democratic control of immigration policy after we leave the EU.

“We must be much more open to high skilled immigration such as scientists but we must also assure the public that, as we leave the EU, we have control over the number of unskilled immigrants coming into the country.”

The Tory leadership frontrunner said the UK should “learn from” Australia which assesses people on age, English skills, qualifications and occupation.

The current Government plans do not have a cap on skilled workers and include a minimum 12-month stay for low-skilled workers.

Mr Johnson added: “The public wants an Australian style points-based immigration system and I will deliver it.”

His pledge comes the second day on his official campaign trail.

Mr Johnson was eager to get back into campaigning after an alleged row with his girlfriend, Carrie Symonds dominated headlines over the weekend.

Neighbours of the couple reportedly heard “shouting and plate-smashing” from inside the flat in Camberwell.

In an interview with BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, Mr Johnson said it was “simply unfair” to “drag” his “loved ones” into the political arena.

Political rival, Jeremy Hunt has taken aim at Mr Johnson for not answering questions about the row.

Mr Johnson had been due to take part in a planned Sky News debate with Mr Hunt, however declined the invitation.

He accused the former London Mayor of playing games and stated the move to “duck” the head-to-head is “deeply disrespectful to our members”.
