BORIS Johnson is under growing pressure to sack Sir Patrick Vallance after doomsday data used to order another lockdown turned out to be wrong.

Labour and Tory MPs said confidence in the chief scientific adviser was shattered.

A graph shown at last Saturday’s press conference said England would be hit by up to 1,500 Covid deaths a day by early December.

But Government scientists admitted an error in the modelling overegged the numbers.

The blunder emerged days after Sir Patrick was slammed for claiming 4,000 people a day could die in a worst-case scenario.

But last night Mr Johnson insisted: “The data is irrefutable about what is happening in the country.”

He said hospital admissions had soared and deaths were “on an upward curve that is unmistakeable more than any time since May”.

Asked if Boris Johnson still had confidence in Sir Patrick, a No10 spokesman said: “Yes, of course.”

He added: “There was no error in the underlying analysis.

“The consensus is that without action we will breach the first wave peak in terms of hospital admissions.

“We have acknowledged the mistake which we have corrected and we will continue to try and provide data in the clearest possible way.”
