Boris Johnson set to snatch 20 Labour seats across North in election after ‘do or die’ Brexit pledge

BORIS JOHNSON’s “do or die” Brexit pledge means he’s on course to win over 20 Labour seats across the North in any General Election.

New research out today shows the Tories could make key gains in Labour’s traditional heartlands as the party’s older voters shun Jeremy Corbyn.

Bradshaw Advisory claims ‘Remain’ candidate Helen Goodman will lose Bishops Auckland to the Tories.

And Mr Johnson is also expected to win seats such as Great Grimsby, Rother Valley and Wakefield – home to Mary Creagh.

He will also pick up two constituencies currently held by independents – with Penistone and Stocksbridge tipped to “turn blue” for the first time ever.

The victories would hand the Tories a “net gain” of 18 seats in the North as they lose five other marginals to the Liberal Democrats and Labour.

But the wins could prove decisive in any poll as the PM tries to secure a working majority.

Bradshaw Advisory chief Tom Lees said: “Boris’s strategy is clearly starting to gain traction in Northern Leave voting seats who feel disconnected from Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party.

“This combined with popular policy announcements and the fact that the North is generally getting older means long held Labour seats like Bishop Auckland, Great Grimsby and Blackpool South are likely to turn blue for the first time in generations.”

Labour chair Ian Lavery this Spring said the party’s support for a second referendum risked alienating scores of voters and stop it from winning an Election.

He accused “left-wing intellectuals” of “sneering” at Brexit voters.

Bradshaw Advisory’s research based its findings on existing majorities, whether the seat has switched party before and the way it voted in the 2016 Referendum.

It said the Lib Dems were almost certain to take back Sheffield Hallam, currently held by Labour’s disgraced Jared O’Mara.

But it added that ex-Labour Minister Caroline Flint’s outspoken support for Brexit could help her to hold onto Don Valley.

Mr Johnson is desperately trying to fight off a Tory revolt ahead of a Commons fight over his Brexit plans.

The PM dramatically raised the stakes by signalling he will ask for a snap general election if rebel Tories and opposition MPs back measures aimed at delaying Brexit to prevent the UK crashing out of the EU without a deal.

In a sign of the bitter divisions within the Conservative ranks, former chancellor Philip Hammond accused Downing Street of “rank hypocrisy” and warned of the “fight of a lifetime” if officials attempt to prevent him from standing at the next general election as a Conservative candidate.

The PM’s official spokesman confirmed that if there was to be an election it would be held before the European Council summit of EU leaders on October 17.

Speaking in Downing Street last night Mr Johnson had made clear that “there are no circumstances in which I will ask Brussels to delay” Brexit beyond October 31.

Mr Johnson could take on the unenviable accolade of having the shortest reign of any British Prime Minister should he lose a snap election next month.
