Boris Johnson ready to 'regain control' of leadership race after row with Carrie Symonds

The former Foreign Secretary looked “anxious” but ready to “regain control” after a row with his girlfriend, Carrie Symonds dominated headlines over the weekend. Mr Johnson seemed “tense” and “awkward” at the beginning of Tuesday, The Sun reported. However, he later relaxed after meetings in Surrey and London.

Body language expert Jo Hemmings told The Sun: “There’s an awkwardness and lack of genuine sincerity in both his hands buried deeply in his pockets – always a sign of being secretive – and a strained half smile, indicating emotion discomfort.”

After analysis pictures of Boris on his campaign travel, Ms Hemmings said: “They are rather like an imposter doing an impression of Boris.

“So they are Boris’s characteristic gestures – the ‘royal’ wave, the double thumbs up and the awkward schoolboy, with his hands behind his back, but the facial expressions don’t match.

“Mouth agape, like a fish struggling for air, he seems anxious and deflated rather than a confident PM in waiting.

“He’s rattled and he imagines those expansive gestures will disguise his concerns.”

Mr Johnson came under fire this weekend when a row with Ms Symonds in their Camberwell home was recorded and sent to The Guardian.

The neighbour called the police after hearing “shouting and plate-smashing” from inside the flat.

Mr Johnson refused to comment on the alleged row and has since been pictured happily with his girlfriend.

In an interview with BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg Mr Johnson said it was “simply unfair” to “drag” his “loved ones” into the political arena.

Political rival, Jeremy Hunt has taken aim at Mr Johnson for not answering questions about the row.

Mr Johnson had been due to take part in a planned Sky News debate with Mr Hunt, however declined the invitation.

He accused the former London Mayor of playing games and stated the move to “duck” the head-to-head is “deeply disrespectful to our members”.
