Boris Johnson is gagging for an election – and disbelieving him just saves time

Immediately disbelieving congenital liar Boris Johnson saves time.

And a Prime Fibber, gagging for an early General Election, pretending he doesn’t is another fib on a charge sheet lengthening daily.

Shouts of “stop the coup” from demonstrators massed at the gates of Downing Street as the Tory charlatan delivered a Party Political Broadcast for the Conservative Party outside No 10 underlined why a contest could backfire spectacularly.

Wriggling Johnson is desperate, I suspect, to escape his Halloween Horror Brexit hook.

Yet Jeremy Corbyn must make him sweat if, as expected, Tory rebels join with Labour, Libs, SNP, Plaid Cymru, a Green and assorted Independents to extend the Article 50 departure process until 31 January and defuse a kamikaze exit.

Opposition party leaders suddenly working together must first save Britain in Europe.

Then Corbyn’s challenge is to dictate the timing and road to an election, jumping over Tony Blair’s “elephant trap”.

Firstly, by ensuring Johnson can’t bring the date forward before 31 October’s cleared and, secondly, demanding it’s triggered by the PM expressing no confidence in himself – which gives Labour a fortnight to form an alternative Government.

Brenda from Bristol should prepare to go back to the polls this Autumn and give a bloody nose to the head of a ragtag Right-wing regime threatening to defy the law, a Conservative leader sidelining Parliament because he’s terrified of its sovereignty and a hypocrite vowing to dump Tory MPs who vote against Brexit as he did twice.

No evidence exists of meaningful negotiations with our European neighbours, Michel Barnier emphasising the Northern Irish backstop remains until there’s an answer to the Irish question.

The Johnson who declared he wouldn’t meet other leaders until the backstop was off the table did, of course, meet Merkel and Macron while it still is.

Should he put forward a deal, the odds are it would be May’s tweaked plan with his face on the cover.

Tory Brextremist Ultras may yet be among the people sold out by a lying egomaniac.

Johnson has run an election campaign – not a Government – since the day he moved into Downing Street at the end of July.

The Tories are low in polls if ahead of Labour, nowhere near as commanding as 2017 when May lost the party’s majority, and a Brexit Party fishing in the same waters is a bigger danger to Johnson than Corbyn.

The lying PM should be careful what he wishes for. George Canning’s 119 days record as the shortest PM in history is up for grabs.
