Boris Johnson girlfriend: How Carrie Symonds could shun Balmoral like Meghan Markle

Boris Johnson will be making the traditional prime ministerial visit to Balmoral Castle this weekend, joining the Queen with his girlfriend Carrie Symonds by his side. But it appears the couple will not be spending as much time with the Queen as they had hoped after their trip has been cut short amid Brexit chaos this week. British politics have descended into chaos over the last few days, meaning Mr Johnson is unable to spend a long duration with the Queen. Instead he and Ms Symonds are expected to dine with the Queen tonight returning to Westminster on Saturday.

Boris Johnson and Ms Symonds have planned to travel up to the Queen’s castle in Aberdeenshire tonight before returning to London on Saturday.

The couple were originally planning to spend the entire weekend, as it tradition.

Each summer the Queen spends time at Balmoral Castle, where she is joined by other members of the royal family and where she traditionally hosts the leader of the country for a weekend in September.

But now, Ms Symonds and the PM have snubbed the Queen’s invitation, cutting short their weekend, to return to London and manage the critical political climate.

The snub is following in the footsteps of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who rejected the Queen’s invitation to spend time with her this summer.

The Sussexes declined this year saying four-month-old Archie was too young.

A royal source told the Sun: “Harry and Meghan had no plans to go to Balmoral this summer as they felt Archie was too young.

“It’s a bit odd, as his age didn’t stop them taking him to Ibiza for a week and then to see Elton John in France.”

It was expected this would be the Duchess of Sussex’s first visit to Balmoral, after she shunned the Queen again, because she was in the early stages of pregnancy.

But this isn’t the only way Carrie and Meghan are similar.

Conservationist Ms Symonds would have likely found herself at odds with the royals should their stay not have been cut short, due to their pastimes famously including blood sports.

The public relations expert is a senior adviser at Oceana, a US-based environmental campaign group and is know for her animal rights campaigning.

Meghan, too, is famously against blood sports – and was reumoured to be the reason Harry pulled out of the traditional Christmas shoot in 2017.

A royal insider said: “The Boxing Day shoot was always going to be a tricky issue. Meghan is a keen animal rights campaigner and doesn’t like hunting in any form.”

“Harry loves it and has always been out there on Boxing Day. But if it means breaking with long-standing royal traditions to avoid upsetting her, so be it.

“It’s fair to say that there are some pretty stunned faces around here.”

Ms Symonds, 31, is the first unmarried political partner to be invited to visit Balmoral.

A Number 10 spokeswoman said: “The PM has accepted Her Majesty the Queen’s invitation to visit Balmoral.

“He will have an audience of Her Majesty on Friday followed by dinner, before returning to London on Saturday.”

The meeting between the Prime Minister and the Queen will be the first since Mr Johnson accepted her Majesty’s invitation to form a Government in July.

But while the political couple may have been excited for some rest and recuperation, the political turbulence means Mr Johnson is forced to return to Westminster as soon as possible.

This week, his Brexit plan was left in tatters after legislation was passed in Commons to enable MPs to prevent Mr Johnson forcing through a no deal exit from the EU.

MPs agreed to give the bill to stop a no-deal Brexit on October 31 a second reading by 329 votes to 300 with a majority of 29, and now the government has said the bill will complete its passage through the Lords today.

The bill requires the PM to either pass a deal in Parliament or get MPs to agree a no deal Brexit by October 19, or he is forced to ask for the deadline extension of January 31, 2020.
