Boris Johnson claims he has ‘no recollection’ of describing the French as ‘turds’

Boris Johnson today claimed he had “no recollection” of calling the French turds while Foreign Secretary.

The frontrunner for Prime Minister tried to build bridges by speaking of “our French friends” during a hustings in Exeter.

However, a French diplomat – London-based press attache Aurélie Bonal – responded to reports of his undiplomatic language by tweeting an emoji for poo with the hashtag “Friday Feeling”.

Asked if he made the crude remark, Mr Johnson told the Exeter gathering: “I have no recollection of this comment.” Pressed that it appeared to have been leaked from the Foreign Office, he responded: “Perhaps what everyone will want to know is, can I get a fantastic deal for our country from our French friends, can we go forwards in a friendly, collegiate way, and yes, of course we can.”

Answering questions, he rejected calls for the sugar tax to be extended to products like milkshake, saying the best answer to the obesity crisis was get children to be “more active”.

Asked to tell the audience something they did not already know about him, Mr Johnson replied: “My weight.

“I think the last time I looked it’s gone up again, I think I’m about 15 and a half again. I was 16 and a half, so I’ve made progress.”

He played down reports he has picked Home Secretary Sajid Javid the job of Chancellor.

“Nobody has been offered a job,” he insisted.

Mr Johnson rejected calls to lower the voting age to 16, saying that “not enough” 18 to 24 year olds used their votes at present, and it was more important to get people to “value their votes” than extend the franchise.
