Boris Johnson will announce the move as part of his first Queen’s Speech on Monday.

He said he wanted to “leave our country in a better state than we found it” and that it would “improve our environment and the quality of the air we all breathe”.

Mr Johnson said: “This landmark legislation will set a framework of far-reaching legally binding targets to reduce plastics, restore biodiversity, improve the quality of our water.”

It is thought that there will be a target for reducing fine particles in the air known as PM25.

They they are able to get into the bloodstream because of their tiny size.

The specific details and timeframe will be set out at a later date.

It comes after it was revealed 2.6million pupils attend schools in areas where the level of fine particles in the air is far greater than the limit set by the World Health Organisation.

Every school in London is above the limit.
