The two leaders will meet at the G7 Summit in Biarritz in August. They both spoke to each other by phone on Friday evening and expressed their commitment to deliver an “ambitious free trade agreement” post-Brexit. Downing Street also said Mr Trump congratulated Boris Johnson on his new role.
The spokesman said: “They agreed that Brexit offers an unparalleled opportunity to strengthen the economic partnership between the UK and United States.
“The leaders both expressed their commitment to delivering an ambitious free trade agreement and to starting negotiations as soon as possible after the UK leaves the EU.”
According to Downing Street the two leaders also discussed the escalating situation in the Persian Gulf.
Last week Iranian forces seized a UK registered oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman.

The incident appeared to be in retaliation to British Royal Marines seizing an Iranian tanker off Gibraltar, claiming it was going to violate EU sanctions by travelling to Syria.
The Downing Street spokesman commented: “The Prime Minister and the President also discussed the current tensions with Iran and the need to work together and with partners to address their destabilising behaviour in the Gulf.
“They discussed the important relationship between our countries and the President’s successful state visit to the UK last month.
“They ended by looking forward to seeing each other at the G7 Summit in Biarritz next month.”

Trump had a two day state visit to the UK on June 4-5.
During this he attended events with senior Royals, including The Queen, held meetings with then Prime Minister Theresa May and enjoyed a state banquet.
However thousands attended an anti-Trump protest in central London whilst Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn boycotted the banquet.
On Friday US ambassador Woody Johnson claimed relations between Trump and Mr Johnson would be “sensational”.

He added: “We’re going to have bumps in the road, no question, but we are two great countries.
“If we look forward optimistically between our two countries, we’re going to lift all the people in this country to independence and all the things you voted for in the referendum.
“I think that’s what the president wants and what your new prime minister wants too.”
Both Mr Johnson and Trump were prominent supporters of the UK’s decision to quit the European Union.
