MANY of us are not putting enough away for a rainy day. One in three has less than £1,500 squirreled away, while 15 per cent have no savings at all, according to a study by comparison site finder.com.
But using an app could be the key to speedy money-saving. Hopefully these ideas can put you on the track to financial ’appiness . . .

SUBSCRIPTION SAVING: The average person wastes £640 a year on unwanted subscriptions, recent figures show. The Free Trial Surfing feature on the DoNotPay app works by automatically cancelling your subscription once your free trial comes to an end, thanks to an algorithm.
The app is currently only available for iPhone users, but there are plans to launch an Android and web version in the future too, so it might be worth keeping an eye on. Another simple way to do it is to use your phone’s calendar app and set alerts for the end of trial day, I do this a lot.
SUPER SAVING: One of the new features if you get a Monzo card (and the app) is the clever “rounding up” system. When you’re spending money, it rounds the price up to the nearest pound and puts the remainder in a separate “rainy day” pot. For example, if I bought something for £1.70, it would make the spend £2 and put 30p in my fund. I built up £12 just this week.
SMART SAVING: The apps Plum and Chip both work by reading your account spending then working out a percentage to “steal” and save for you. It takes the hassle out of organising new direct debits, too. Plum lets you invest your saving as well. But always read the small print first.
SNAP SAVING: Upload shop receipts via Huyu or take surveys to earn stars — 500 give you £5. It is quick to snap a receipt pic. And don’t forget . . . the Sun Savers app!
