Bookies braced for Tiger Roll gamble if Grand National hat-trick bid gets green light

Bookmakers are bracing themselves for the “ABT Grand National” – anyone but Tiger.

The dual victor is Ladbrokes’ 5-1 favourite to land the historic hat-trick at Aintree on April 4 – and the Magic Sign’s Simon Clare said on Tuesday he believes the market for the 2020 National revolves around one horse.

“We go 5-1 about Tiger Roll and it’s not stretching credibility to suggest he could go off at half those odds on the day – or even shorter,” Clare said yesterday.

“Bookmakers are often accused of hyperbole, but no punter with an interest in the 2020 National will want to say they didn’t back Tiger Roll when he made history.

“We are 14-1 bar Tiger Roll, which brings in Native River, last year’s runner-up Magic Of Light and Kimberlite Candy.

“It goes against the grain for the bookies to cheer a National horse carrying the colours of JP McManus, but if Kimberlite Candy and Tiger Roll are duelling at the Elbow on April 4, we know where our loyalties will lie.”

Kimberlite Candy, second to Walk In The Mill over the National fences in the Becher Chase in December, went one better in Warwick’s Classic Chase, a race used by One For Arthur as a springboard to National glory in 2017, five weeks later.

“We’ve always viewed him as a National horse,” said the eight-year-old’s trainer Tom Lacey.

“He’s almost gone from boy to man overnight.”
