Boeing forced to store 737 Max planes in its employee car park as new ‘flaw’ means aircraft will be grounded until September

Hundreds of Boeing 737 Max planes have been grounded around the world since earlier this due to two crashes that killed hundreds of people.

Ethiopian Airlines experienced problems shortly after take off, leading to the crash which killed 157 people, while 189 people were killed in the Lion Air crash last year.

Other images shared by Seattle news station KING-TV show a huge Boeing park filled with all of the planes that are now out of commission.

Over 40 planes are parked in one of the images, including for American Airlines and Norwegian Air.

According to Bloomberg, it costs around $2,000 (£1,577) a month per plane to park them, causing further financial issues for the plane manufacturer.

It comes after the news that a new software problem has been found in the troubled Boeing 737 Max that could push the plane’s nose down automatically – and fixing the flaw is almost certain to further delay the plane’s return to flying after two deadly crashes.

Boeing said on Wednesday that the FAA “identified an additional requirement” for software changes that the aircraft manufacturer has been working on for eight months, since shortly after the first crash.

Boeing said in a statement: “Boeing agrees with the FAA’s decision and request, and is working on the required software to address the FAA’s request.

Government test pilots trying out Boeing’s updated Max software in a flight simulator last week found a flaw that could result in the plane’s nose pitching down, according to two people familiar with the matter. In both Max crashes, the plane’s flight-control software pushed the nose down based on faulty readings from one sensor.

The people said fixing the issue might be accomplished through software changes or by replacing a microprocessor in the plane’s flight-control system.

One said the latest setback is likely to delay the plane’s return to service by an extra one to three months. Both spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss aspects of the review process that are not public.

In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration said it will lift its grounding of the plane only when it deems the jet safe there is no set timeline.

They said: “On the most recent issue, the FAA’s process is designed to discover and highlight potential risks. The FAA recently found a potential risk that Boeing must mitigate.”

Boeing is scaling back the power of flight-control software called MCAS to push the nose down. It is also linking the software’s nose-down command to two sensors on each plane instead of relying on just one in the original design.

It is still uncertain what kind of training pilots will get for flying the plane with the new software either computer-based or in-flight simulators.

Despite this, International Airlines Group (IAG) announced plans to buy 200 Boeing 737 Max planes.

While not final, the deal is estimated to be worth upwards of $24 billion (£19 billion) based on list prices.

IAG, which owns British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, Vueling and LEVEL, is one of the largest airline groups in the world.

The company’s Chief Executive Willie Walsh said of the 737 Max: “We have every confidence in Boeing and expect that the aircraft will make a successful return to service in the coming months”.

Mr Walsh, a former 737 pilot, said he would have “no hesitation” in flying on the plane, and voiced confidence in its safety.

IAG is planning to buy both the Max 8, which seats 178 passengers, and the larger Max 10, which sits 230 passengers.

However, it hasn’t said how the orders will be split. The plan is for the 200 aircraft to be delivered between 2023 and 2027.

The only UK airlines to fly with Boeing 787 Max 8 planes are TUI and Norwegian Air.

However, both airlines have reassured passengers that their flights will not be affected.

Airlines in the US such as United and American have been badly affected – both cancelling scores of flights every day.
