B&M and Poundland will be selling Opal Fruits next month – 22 years after its name was changed to Starburst

RETRO sweet fans will once again be able to get their hands on Opal Fruits from next month as the iconic chews finally return to UK stores.

The soft taffy sweets were first introduced by parent company Mars in 1960 but their name was changed 22 years to the now more-commonly known Starburst.

Mars has confirmed Opal Fruits will be coming back in late February – but only for a limited time.

The original flavours will also be making a return including strawberry, lemon, orange and lime.

Starburst will also be sold alongside Opal Fruits.

The main difference between the two products is that Starburst includes a combined lemon and lime sweet, plus a blackcurrant chew.

Opal Fruits will be available in 152g pouches in Poundland, B&M, Home Bargains, Iceland, Savers and The Range.

They’ll have a RRP of £1 but stores are free to set their own prices, so you may end up paying slightly more or less than this.

Mars couldn’t give us an exact launch date but said the first shipment will roll out on February 24, while Poundland said they expect to stock the sweets for “eight to ten weeks”.

Opal Fruits were rebranded as Starburst in 1998 to match what the iconic sweets were being called in the US at the time.

They’ve been reintroduced to British shores several times since then, with the last time being in 2008 for a 12-week stint.

Sweet lovers who’ve been calling for their return ever since will no doubt be delighted by the news.

We’ve seen hundreds of tweets over the years where those with a sweet tooth have called for the return of their beloved Opal Fruits.

Posting last month in response to Starburst asking for opinions on a new flavour, one person bluntly put: “Bring back Opal Fruits.”

Writing in July 2017, another Twitter user said: “Bring back Opal Fruits I say.”

In October 2012, someone else said: “Thinks that starbursts should go back to being called Opal Fruits. BRING BACK OPAL FRUITS.”

Hannah Jackson, senior brand manager at Mars, said: “I’m delighted that Opal Fruits are making a special return to British shelves.

“Bringing back the original flavours is sure to bring a smile to the faces of retro treat lovers across the nation. Be quick, though – they won’t be available for long!”

Chocolate fans were able to take a trip down memory lane last September when Snickers changed its name back to Marathon after almost 30 years.

Walkers has also brought back two iconic Wotsits flavours – BBQ beef and flamin’ hot.
