Blade Runner star Rutger Hauer dies aged 75 after short illness

Actor Rutger Hauer has died at the age of 75.

The Blade Runner star passed away in the Netherlands after a short illness, his agent confirmed. His funeral was held on Wednesday.

He played Roy Batty in the Ridley Scott-directed cult sci-fi flick opposite Harrison Ford.

Director Guillermo Del Toro paid tribute to the actor on Twitter, saying: ‘RIP the great Rutger Hauer: an intense, deep, genuine and magnetic actor that brought truth, power and beauty to his films.

‘My personal favorites: Flesh + Blood, Eureka, The Hitcher, Blade Runner, Ladyhawke and Blind Fury.’

His other notable roles were 2005 releases Sin City, as Cardinal Roark and Batman Begins as Earle, Bruce Wayne’s corporate nemesis.

He also appeared in TV series True Blood as Niall Brigant and The Last Kingdom as Ravn.

Upcoming projects include festive mini-series A Christmas Carol and Lyra’s Wish: Saving Santa.

Born in 1944 in Breukelen, the Netherlands, to two acting teachers, he joined the Dutch merchant Navy at 15 before returning to Amsterdam in 1962.

Before launching a permanent acting career, he had studied acting before taking on a stint in the army.

Hauer penned his own dialogue for his iconic ‘tears in the rain’ speech during the face-off with Ford in Blade Runner, which was his sophomore American role.

The actor is survivved by his second wife Ineke ten Cate, who he was married to for 50 years, and actress daughter Aysha Hauer from his marriage to Heidi Merz.
