Black Widow Set Photos May Confirm Florence Pugh's Mystery Marvel Role

Some new Black Widow set photos from Budapest have found their way online. While the photos aren’t all that interesting on their own, further inspection seemingly confirms who actress Florence Pugh is playing in the long awaited standalone movie. Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce the Black Widow movie, which many believe will be a prequel due to the sacrifice Natasha Romanoff made during Avengers: Endgame. However, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is expected to make some big Marvel Cinematic Universe announcements this summer at San Diego Comic-Con and D23.

One of the Black Widow set photos features two dummy boxes. They don’t seem to be a big deal until you notice the labels on the boxes, which read “Natasha,” as in Natasha Romanoff and “Yelena,” a name that is more than likely representing Yelena Belova. Both Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh have been spotted on the set, so these set dummies may finally confirm Pugh is playing Belova, which has been speculated by hardcore MCU fans for months now.

Yelena Belova and Natasha Romanoff are enemies at first in the comics, but later find common ground. The character, who was first introduced in 1999, has ties to S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra and is also a Russian spy. Most interesting is the fact that Belova has been Black Widow in the comics, which may lead to speculation of her picking up the mantle later on in the MCU. That’s a pretty big stretch, but Phase 4 is going to see some big changes to the MCU and as Kevin Feige recently said, there is a method to their madness.

Kevin Feige didn’t confirm the Black Widow movie is on the way, even though we all know it is. He also did not confirm whether or not it is going to be a prequel, but he did talk about prequels and their benefits, so he pretty much did confirm when the movie will take place without giving away very much. He had this to say about the MCU and prequels in general.

“There are ways to do prequels that are less informative or answer questions you didn’t necessarily have, and then there are ways to do prequels where you learn all sorts of things you never knew before.”

When talking about prequels, Kevin Feige mentioned his love of Better Call Saul and the way it added to the Breaking Bad franchise in a worthwhile way. With that being said, we will more than likely get some further backstory on Natasha Romanoff and her mysterious past, along with some new and old characters. Being an MCU project, fans can assure it won’t be exactly what they were expecting, which is usually a good thing. While we wait for some more information coming later this summer, you can check out the Black Widow set photos teasing Yelena Belova below, thanks to the Best of Widows Twitter account.
