Curtis Jackson, best known for his stage name 50 Cent, is delving deeper into the TV world. After huge success with Starz’s Power, in which he starred and co-executively produced, Jackson’s latest project Black Mafia Family has been given the green light. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know.

When is Black Mafia Family out?

Black Mafia Family was given the green light today (Tuesday, April 7) by American network Starz.

Starz is home to Jackson’s first project, Power, and is also home to huge shows including The Spanish Princess and Outlander.

Unfortunately, Black Mafia Family has not yet been given an official release date.

The project is in its very early stages, so it is unlikely to arrive until the end of 2020 or 2021.

However, due to the current Coronavirus outbreak, production of Black Mafia Family will be slow to get started, so the show’s premiere date may be moved back even further.

Jeffrey Hirsch, President and CEO of Starz said: “This is a project Curtis has always been incredibly passionate about and we are excited to have him as our partner in bringing it to life.

“Black Mafia Family has all the hallmarks of a great drama, from the larger-than-life Flenory brothers to the deadly, high-stakes world they inhabited.
“This series is going to be an incredible ride for audiences around the world.”

Who stars in Black Mafia Family?

At the moment, the cast of Black Mafia Family has not been officially announced.

The series was only just given the green light, so news of the show’s cast is expected to be announced in the coming months.

Whether Jackson himself will star in the series remains unknown for now.
Fans of the rapper will know he is no stranger to acting, having appeared as Kanan Stark in Power.

However, he will serve as an executive producer on the show.

Randy Huggins, best known for his work on Power, Criminal Minds and The Sheild has been named as the show’s writer.

What is Black Mafia Family about?

Black Mafia Family is based on the real-life story of the infamous Detroit brothers, Demetrius ‘Big Meech’ and Terry ‘Southwest T’ Flenory.

Big Meech and Southwest T were from Detroit and founded the Black Mafia Family, a drug trafficking and money laundering organisation in the US.

The siblings also entered the hip-hop music business as BMF Entertainment, serving as a promoter for several high profile hip-hop artists.

However, BMF Entertainment was also a front organisation to help launder drug money.

They became one of America’s most notorious crime families but also had a heavy influence on the world of hip hop.

“It sheds light on their partnership and how it went beyond the drug trade and bled into the world of hip hop to make them icons.

“Their unwavering belief in family loyalty would be the cornerstone of their partnership and the crux of their eventual estrangement.

“This series is rooted in love, family and capitalism in the pursuit of the American dream.”

In a statement, Jackson said: “I told you Black Mafia Family was coming and it’s going to be the biggest show on television.

“Meech and Terry are legends and I am excited to bring their story to Starz.”
