Filming is currently underway on the third season of hit drama Pose, with Billy Porter set to return as Pray Tell, emcee of the spectacular balls held in New York City.

However, the ball scenes have been especially hard to navigate amid the coronavirus pandemic, Billy recently revealed.

While speaking to Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest on American talk show Live with Kelly and Ryan, Billy, 51, said that he felt ‘grateful’ to have been able to return to work.

But, as can be expected, production on the show co-created by Ryan Murphy hasn’t been entirely smooth-sailing in the present climate.

‘We are shooting season three right now with all of the Covid protocols in place,’ he said.

‘It is not the easiest version of filming a television show that I have ever been a part of, but I am grateful that we are back to work.’

The Broadway star explained that Disney, which acquired Pose’s TV network FX in 2019, is particularly stringent when it comes to Covid-safe measures.

‘Disney is now the parent company of FX and they have really taken this seriously,’ he stated.

‘They’ve taken the science seriously and they are keeping us all very safe during this process so I’m just grateful to be back working.’

Billy shared that they are ‘still trying to figure out’ how they can make filming work with the ball scenes, which are an essential element of the show.

‘We’re still trying to figure that part out. We have not shot any of the balls yet,’ he said.

‘We’ve been shooting the scene work and I believe that we’re waiting for the ball sequences to hopefully be shooting them inside some sort of vaccine situation so that we can have all those people in the room. So we’re pushing those scenes to next year.’

However long it takes, we’re sure it’ll be worth the wait for the third season of the programme, which is set in the 1980s and early 1990s against the backdrop of the HIV/AIDs crisis.

While speaking to Metro.co.uk earlier this year, Pose casting director Alexa L Fogel recalled how Billy’s audition inspired Ryan to write the character of Pray into the show.

‘Ryan just had this idea that if he could sort of come in and do The Emcee in Paris is Burning that he would write a role for him,’ Alexa said.

‘I mean, that’s the really cool thing about the way Ryan works, is that he gets ideas on the fly based on people’s abilities.’

The first two seasons of Pose are available to watch on Netflix and on BBC iPlayer.
