Billy Gilmour has lifted the lid on the advice he received from Ross Barkley and Frank Lampard following Chelsea’s 7-1 victory over Grimsby.

Goals from Barkley, Michy Batshuayi (x2), Pedro, Kurt Zouma, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi sent Chelsea into the Carabao Cup fourth round in convincing fashion.

The Blues will face Manchester United for a place in the quarter-finals and Lampard will have no problem with fielding his young stars once again after their impressive showing on Wednesday night.

Six academy products featured as Chelsea swept aside their League Two opposition with ease at Stamford Bridge.

Last month, Gilmour made his first appearance for Chelsea in a 2-2 with Sheffield United but the 18-year-old was handed his full debut against Grimsby.

The Scotland Under-21 international played the full 90 minutes alongside Barkley and has since thanked his midfield partner for the advice he passed on during the win.

‘My game is about getting on the ball and starting play and that is why I started tonight,’ Gilmour told Standard Sport after the final whistle.

‘I have been training well and doing well in games and the gaffer has told me just to play how I play and he believes in me.

‘Ross [Barkley] was really good with me, communicating with me and saying, “Look, you don’t need to run all the time, sometimes just stay.”

‘I did that and that is how I got most of the ball.

‘Obviously it is good for them to tell me so I can improve, they have been really good with me.’

Lampard believes Gilmour was man of the match during Chelsea’s comprehensive victory.

‘I thought Billy Gilmour was the best player on the pitch,’ said the Chelsea manager

‘He moves the ball at a pace. Every pass he hits is punchy and into people’s feet. I’m delighted for him.’
