Bill & Ted Face The Music will, at long last, get to face the music!
That’s right, dudes and dudettes, after decades of delays and false starts, the third film in the Bill & Ted film franchise is officially set to begin production, also marking an actual release date. Consequently, fans need not sit around and morosely philosophise about dust in the wind like So-crates Johnson, because the mirthful metalheads are returning for their long-awaited threequel!
This… well, excellent confirmation comes from Hammerstone Studios, which has announced that Bill & Ted Face The Music will begin production this summer, of course, with Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter back in front of the cameras reprising their iconic eponymous roles, respectively as Ted “Theodore” Logan and Bill S. Preston Esq. The film will be released by Orion Pictures, through banner United Artists, now officially scheduled to drop its time traveling phone booth into theaters on August 21, 2020.
The announcement came with a video featuring the stars themselves, Reeves and Winter, who, standing in front of an empty Hollywood Bowl, express their gratitude to the fans, whom they credit for giving this project the momentum it needed to come to fruition.
As Hammerstone’s statement hints of what’s in store for Bill & Ted Face The Music:
“With an overwhelming response and fandom surrounding the cult classic, the original team, along with some new faces is set to make their most triumphant comeback for the long anticipated third installment.”
The franchise became a pop culture powerhouse off the success of 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, even spawning two-season-spanning Saturday morning cartoon Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures, which, amongst an array of merchandise, even had its own line of action figures.
Indeed, elements of the intended story have been floating around for years. Based on what’s been revealed, the threequel will catch up with Bill and Ted – who we last saw as early post-high-school-aged wannabe rockers in Bogus Journey – who are now middle-aged men, saddled with the responsibilities of family, while still quixotically chasing their future-fated world-peace-achieving fame as rockers Wyld Stallyns. Out of ideas and having lost their youthful vigor, the duo will embark on another time-travelling trip to rejuvenate their inspiration.
Bill & Ted Face The Music will be directed by Dean Parisot, who fielded the Star Trek-spoofing cult classic, Galaxy Quest, as well as RED 2 and the remake of Fun With Dick And Jane. Parisot will work off a script by original franchise creators Chris Matheson (Imagine That) and Ed Solomon (Men In Black, Now You See Me).
