Virat Kohli is optimistic the injury Bhuvneshwar Kumar sustained during India’s World Cup victory over Pakistan is not serious.

Bhuvneshwar pulled up in his third over in the World Cup group game in Manchester and was unable to return to the field after receiving treatment from India’s medical team.

India did not miss their opening bowler too severely, however, with Pakistan falling 89 runs short via the DLS method after Kohli’s side posted 336-5.

Asked about Bhuvneshwar’s condition after the match, Kohli said: ‘It’s a slight niggle, he slipped on the foot marks.

‘It doesn’t too serious. Hopefully he will be available for the next few games. If not [he should return] towards the end of the knockout stages.

‘We have other bowlers ready to go and we coped well without him today so we’re not too worried. But he should be fine, he doesn’t think it’s too bad.’

Pakistan won the toss at Old Trafford but that was just about as good as it got for Sarfaraz Ahmed’s inconsistent side, who are now on the verge of a World Cup exit.

Opening batsman Rohit Sharma scored a century and was supported by Virat Kohli (77) and KL Rahul (57) as India surpassed 330.

Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav then all took two wickets as Pakistan reached 212-6 off 40 overs, falling 89 runs short of a DLS win.

Kohli added: ‘Rohit’s knock was outstanding but to get to 330 you need a team effort and that is exactly what happened.

‘He is such a good ODI player, when he gets to 70 he is unstoppable. It allows me to come in and play in a certain role, the guys are playing their roles nicely.

‘Kuldeep is a wicket taker, a longer spell helped him, he was getting rhythm and the ball to get Babar Azam was brilliant. A very important moment in the game.’
