Beyonce has claimed her seven-year-old daughter is a “cultural icon” as part of a long-running trademark dispute with a small business.

The singer’s attempt to trademark the name Blue Ivy has met with opposition by wedding planner Wendy Morales who owns a business with the same title.

Ms Morales argues she was using the name first but Beyonce’s lawyers have described her opposition as “frivolous”.

The star’s legal counsel has asked the US Patent and Trademark Office to dismiss the claim, arguing Blue Ivy, Beyonce’s eldest child with husband Jay-Z, is a “cultural icon”.

‘Fashion moments’

Laywers say Blue Ivy has been “described as a ‘mini style star’ and has been celebrated for her ‘fashion moments’.

“Her life and activities are followed extensively by the media and the public,” they also claim.

“The opposition, which claims that consumers are likely to be confused between a boutique wedding event planning business and Blue Ivy Carter, the daughter of two of the most famous performers in the world, is frivolous and should be refused in its entirety,” they said in court documents.

Lawyers for Beyonce also noted the event company’s lack of social media accounts, describing it as a “small business, with just three regional offices and a handful of employees”.

They also said Morales had exploited Blue Ivy’s fame for entrepreneurial purposes.

Business received a boost

The documents claim Morales “exhibited a pattern and practice of affirmatively attempting to connect its brand with Blue Ivy Carter to increase its exposure and drum up business.”

Specifically, the filings refer to interviews Ms Morales gave following Blue Ivy’s birth, in which she admitted that her business received a boost in attention.

Beyonce says Ms Morales also had a sale on Blue Ivy’s birthday.

Ms Morales has previously claimed Beyonce “never produced any documents, tangible things, or other factual evidence” when she applied for the trademark.
