Beverley Knight's Olivier Awards 2019 performance leaves viewers seething: 'Major fail'

Beverley Knight took to the stage at this year’s Olivier Awards to pay tribute to theatre stars who have passed away in the last year. The 46-year-old soul singer performed Memory by Barbara Streisand to a star studded crowd, including A-lister Tom Hiddleston and EastEnders favourite Danny Dyer. While her performance at the Royal Albert Hall was met with cheers from the audience, viewers at home were less than impressed with the overall presentation of it. Some of those who tuned in complained the memorial segment was filmed in such a way that it obscured the names and faces of the deceased.

They claimed the spotlight, which shone a light on the West End performer, blocked their vision, with some classing it as a “major” technical fail.

On Twitter, one person groaned: “Why have this memorial section and then film it in such a way so you can’t read the names or see the faces of the people they’re remembering?”

“I was annoyed about that too. I was shouting at the TV but it didn’t help! I also thought that the names were too dark for the dark background and made them difficult to read even when you could see them,” another added.

A third individual exclaimed: “I thought that! The spotlight was right in the way. A slightly different camera angle would’ve made all the difference!”

Someone else chipped in: “Not the first time this has happened where they think the performer merits the camera, and the photographs and captions are ignored. A major fail for the technical team.”

A fifth commentator remarked: “As brilliant as she is I wish on the televised version we could have focused in on those whom have left us and not Beverley Knight – no disrespect to her.”

Someone else asked: “Anyone else bothered that all the way through the obituaries at the Olivier Awards there was no focus on the screen and faces of the honoured actors and creatives, only of Beverley Knight?”

Despite, the apparent disappointment for some viewers, others raved about the singer’s performance, with one writing: “Beverly Knight sounds lush.”

Another remarked: “Beverley Knight and arts ed singing Memory is so beautiful I’m close to tears.”

“Oh my lord…. Beverley Knight singing Memory in tribute… utterly STUNNING,” a third person swooned.

Beverley looked glamorous on the night in a one shoulder, grecian like gown, which draped across the floor as she walked the red carpet.

The patterned frock had a long floaty belt that feel to her feet, as well as a short split below her ankles.

Her locks were styled in wild curls and she accentuated her natural beauty with of make-up, consisting of lashings of mascara and winged eyeliner.

Other glamorous stars at the event included former Strictly Come Dancing professional, Joanne Clifton, who attended the ceremony with her brother Kevin Clifton.

She put on a show-stopping display in a plunging blue gown, which clinched in at the waist to highlight her sensational physique.

But her daring thigh-high slit proved difficult to manage, as she was seen grappling with the garment on the red carpet.
