Manchester United hero Robin van Persie has hailed Mason Greenwood’s ‘deadly’ and ‘unique’ finishing and claims the forward is far better than he ever was as a youngster.

Greenwood, 18, has established himself as one of the most exciting teenagers in European football after scoring 17 goals in all competitions in a remarkable breakthrough campaign for the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown tremendous faith in Greenwood since the season restarted and the England Under-21 international is expected to start against Sevilla on Sunday as United look to secure their place in the Europa League final.

Greenwood’s power and elegance has often been likened to ex-United star, Van Persie, and the iconic Dutchman has been welcoming these comparisons over the last few months.

And according to the former United striker, Solskjaer has a very special talent on his hands.

‘When I watch him play, it just brings a big smile to my face,’ he told Soccer AM presenter Lloyd Griffith.

‘He’s deadly with his finishing. The way he finishes is very unique. He’s 18 years old!

‘As a young kid, I didn’t score many goals when I was 18 so Mason Greenwood is definitely doing better at 18 than me.’

Van Persie is confident United are heading back in the right direction under Solskjaer and believes the Norwegian deserves enormous credit for the confidence he’s instilled in the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Greenwood.

‘Solskjaer makes Greenwood one of the main guys and that is what you want. You want that coming from the coach,’ the ex-Netherlands international added.

‘And Solskjaer gives that to Bruno Fernandes, to Paul Pogba, to Mason Greenwood, to Marcus Rashford, to Anthony Martial and you can see these guys blossom with that, they love it.

‘They have more control, they’re more bossing games and everyone knows that you have to be consistent if you want to be competing for trophies.

‘They are more consistent now and if they keep doing that they are definitely contenders.’
