All eyes will be on the celebs, from their antics to their meme-inducing fashion statements, when the annual Met Gala kicks off later tonight complete with this year’s ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme.

The star-studded event has spawned countless memes, broken the rules, made headline hitting news with that Solange and Jay-Z fight, as well as birthing the whirlwind romance that was ‘Hiddleswift’.

So in celebration of tonight’s showcase, we’ve rounded up the best Met Gala moments:

1) Kim Kardashian takes all-in-one to a new level

There are jumpsuits and there are onesies – but Kim Kardashian stepped out, quite literally, head-to-toe in an all-in-one gown in 2013. The reality TV star wore a floral Givenchy number which featured in built gloves and a high neckline.

Kim, who was eight months pregnant with daughter North at the time, may have been feeling rosy – but the dress wasn’t a fan favourite.

2) Diddy got tired – so took a break on the stairs

The red carpet may seem like a laugh to us mere mortals – but Diddy proved it’s harder than it looks. The US rapper got tired waiting for his girlfriend Cassie to pose for photographers so, in his own words, “laid down on the stairs”.

Cue flurry of memes comparing him to Aladdin on his magic carpet.

3) Jay-Z and Solange fight

Fighting: Jay Z holds his face after the attack in the lift

The internet broke when footage was released of Solange Knowles beating her brother-in-law Jay-Z in a hotel lift as his wife Beyoncé stood and watched in 2014. Jay-Z addressed the incident three years later, claiming: “It ain’t nothing.” But many believe it was to do with the rapper’s infidelity – something he only admitted to earlier this year after months of speculation.

4) Rihanna’a pizza dress

Serving up: Rihanna became a meme sensation in that Guo Pei gown

Omelette? Pizza? Rihanna in a Guo Pei gown? It was hard to tell, but Rihanna knew how to work it when she hit the red carpet for the 2015 Gala. Not only did the Barbadian singer become a meme sensation – she will arguably go down in history for wearing one of the most iconic Met Gala looks of all time.

5) Jaden Smith brings a handful of his own dreadlocks as a date

Most people bring their partners or maybe even their mum or dad, but in 2017 Jaden Smith walked the red carpet with his cut off blonde dreadlocks. The 19-year-old left fans baffled by his unconventional date, but later cleared up the confusion, telling reporters: “Since I couldn’t bring my sister as a date, I brought my old hair.”

6) Kylie Jenner’s epic bathroom selfie

Kylie Jenner not only broke Anna Wintour’s no selfie rule in 2017 – she gathered a group of A listers to help her before posting it everywhere. Jenner flashed the camera as Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Paris Jackson, Brie Larson, A$AP Rocky, Lily Aldridge, Diddy, Frank Ocean and Michelle Monghan squeezed into the shot.

7) Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott enjoy night off from parenting duties

A small event was not going to cut it for Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott who chose the 2018 Met Gala to make their first red carpet appearance since welcoming daughter Stormi. The new parents put on a loved up display as they coordinated for the Heavenly Bodies themed bash which saw Jenner rock up with jewel-encrusted glasses.

8) Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift dancing at an after party

The 2015 Met Gala marked the birth of celeb phenomenon ‘Hiddleswift’ and the whirlwind romance we didn’t know we needed. Hiddleston and Swift were captured cutting up the dance floor as they took each other on in an epic dance battle which resulted in a short lived relationship and that ‘I [heart] T.S’ vest.

9) Madonna bares all

Feeling cheeky: Madonna makes a political statement with this controversial number (Getty Images)

Madonna came close to going full monty in 2016 when she worked the red carpet in a sheer black Givenchy number which left her bare behind exposed. Some accused her of not sticking to the technology theme while others urged her to cover up. But Madonna later explained the look, telling fans it was a political statement. She said: “My dress at the Met Ball was a political statement as well as a fashion statement. The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society.”

10) Princess Diana makes a royal arrival

Celeb royalty was outdone by actual royalty when the people’s princess made an appearance wearing a John Galliano for Dior navy dress in 1996. All eyes were on the princess who teamed the look with diamonds, pearls and sapphires.
