Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy hopes to return in time for the start of the club’s Champions League campaign in September after a successful procedure on his knee.

The Frenchman missed City’s tour of the far-east after undergoing a small operation on a troublesome knee problem in May.

Mendy has sustained two serious knee injuries since his £50m move to the Eithad two years ago and his return to the side last season was littered with a number of injury setbacks.

Though Mendy’s injuries were not solely knee issues, each setback is believed to be connected to the cruciate ligament tear he sustained in 2017.

The 25-year-old has spent the summer in Barcelona with Dr Ramon Cugat, who has worked with a number of City players such as Kevin De Bruyne since Guardiola’s appointment in 2016.

Metro.co.uk understands Mendy’s recuperation has been smooth and the team in Barcelona are ready to sign him off in order to enable his return to Manchester.

Mendy is therefore expected to continue his rehabilitation in the north-west when his team-mates return this week.

The left-back’s recovery so far has been non-contact but he hopes to step that up once he returns to Manchester as he’s targeting a return in around six weeks’ time.

Mendy’s likely to miss around four Premier League fixtures before his return in mid-September and he’s targeting the away clash at Norwich or City’s first Champions League group stage clash to make his comeback.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is expected to start the season as first choice, though he’ll be pushed by Angelino.

The 22-year-old returned to the Etihad this summer after City decided to activate a £12m buy-back clause in the Spaniard’s contract.
