Bella Thorne reveals she washes her hair with beer – and experts say she might just be onto something

If you’ve been keeping up with Bella Thorne for a while, you’ll know that actress is no stranger to a bottle of hair dye. Whether mint-blonde, auburn-red or ice-white, the actress has explored all the colours of the rainbow in her major hair evolution.

This time around though, the 21-year-old star is undertaking a slightly more unorthodox approach to changing her hair colour, and it’s not a treatment you’ll find in the salon.

The secret ingredient? Beer.

The actress took to Instagram to share a video of her latest hair-dyeing exercise, which took place at a pool party, naturally.

In the video, Thorne tips her head back while her friend slowly pours a pint of beer over her head, which she then lathers through her hair like shampoo. You can even hear a guy in the background remark “I can’t believe you’re doing this right now!,” literally taking the words right out of our mouths.

“For everyone harassing yes it’s beer,” she writes in her caption. “It naturally lightens ur hair and people say it’s good for u.”

“My next film my hair has to be hunny blonde, saving me a trip to the salon,” she goes on to explain. “In my book I talk about the tips and tricks the ups and downs and the very low lows. Order the book right now and I might hand deliver u a case of beer.”

While Thorne’s hair-dyeing habits may seem dubious, using the alcoholic beverage to lighten the locks isn’t completely far-fetched. Some beauty experts claim that beer can even add volume, fight frizz and restore a healthy shine.

Other beauty pros remain sceptical that beer can achieving the same effect as bleach though. “The alcohol content is not high enough to lighten hair after one rinse,” hair specialist Amanda Scott told Cosmopolitan. “While it’s not harmful to dump beer on your head, the proteins in the malt and hops could actually leave your hair feeling brittle.”

We love your spirit Bella, but it might be worth drinking your beer next time around.
