Be prepared for your motor breaking down with our cash-saving tips

CAR breakdowns can drive us mad but having some top gear to hand can help you cope until help arrives.

I spoke to the motoring experts from LeaseCar.uk, who revealed a selection of practical items you should always keep in your vehicle.

Here’s how to stock your car before you set off . . .

Reflective triangles and a high visibility jacket: A high-vis jacket can be a real life-saver, especially in wintry conditions, at night and when stuck on a hard shoulder.

My tip: You can nab a high-vis vest on eBay.co.uk for around £2.99 to wear over your coat — cheaper than a full high-vis jacket for £24.99 at Screwfix.

SAVING: £22

Mobile phone car charger: LeaseCar.uk say: “The last thing you need is a dead phone battery when you need to call a recovery service, so always keep a portable phone charger in your car.”

My tip: As well as a charger, I always carry a portable power pack with me. I like the Mophie Juice Pack PowerStation, £8.99 on Groupon, usually £21.99.

SAVING: £13

Wind-up torch and fuel can: If you have to check under the car hood in the dark, you’ll struggle without a torch. Wind-up options are best as you won’t need batteries. Mountainwarehouse.com has a Dynamo wind-up torch for £6.99, down from £13.99. Also keep an empty fuel can in case you run out on the road. You can walk to the nearest petrol station to fill it up. Wilko’s five-litre one is £4, compared with Halfords where they cost £5.50.

SAVING: £7 torch, £1.50 can

Blanket and map: Leasecar.uk say: “If it rains and you get soaked, a spare blanket or towel is great for drying off or covering your car seat. A paper map will also come in handy if you lose signal.”

I like Dunelm’s fleece throws for £6 — similar throws cost £12 at John Lewis. Get a folded road map of Britain from Amazon.co.uk for £4.49.

SAVING: £6 on a blanket

TESCO Christmas sandwiches have now landed in stores and there are some delicious flavours to choose from.

I like the brie and cranberry one, which is also available as part of the meal deal. For something even more seasonal, try the Finest turkey feast sandwich, £3.
