The former Belgian prime minister and chief Brexit-basher posted made the appeal in a video on his social media account in the immediate aftermath of Theresa May’s announcement of a new deal with the EU which sees her offer up a vote on a second referendum. Mr Verhofstadt said: “At these European elections, pro-Europeans in Britain have the chance to make a noise that the whole of Europe will hear. “Say B****cks to #Brexit – vote for the @LibDems! #EUelections2019.”
Riled Leave voters were quick to flood his page and mock the demand.
One said: “B****cks to EU.”
Another, who used the opportunity to do his own appeal to the British, said: “Dear British friends, Guy and his Elite friends wants an European Army!!
“Wake Up in Gods name! #Brexit.”
Another added: “B*llocks to @guyverhofstadt.”
Another chipped in with: “You couldn’t run a bath let alone a continent.”
A fifth commented said: “Should not be interfering in another nations democratic process!”
The remarks come in a particularly eventful day in terms of Brexit and Theresa May.
She sensationally offered up MPs who vote for the controversial deal a say on whether a fresh Brexit vote should go ahead in a move that outraged Brexiteers.
Jacob Rees-Mogg said: “The Prime Minister’s latest proposals are worse than before and would leave us bound deeply in to the EU.
“It is time to leave on WTO terms.”
Boris Johnson, who is the top contender to swoop in and take Mrs May’s role as Prime Minister with bookies’ odds of 5/1, said: “With great reluctance I backed MV3.
“Now we are being asked to vote for a customs union and a second referendum. The Bill is directly against our manifesto – and I will not vote for it. We can and must do better – and deliver what the people voted for.”
Dominic Raab said: “I listened carefully to the PM’s speech on the govt’s revised terms of Brexit.
“I cannot support legislation that would be the vehicle for a second referendum or Customs Union. Either option would frustrate rather than deliver Brexit – and break our clear manifesto promises.”
Zac Goldsmith added: “I supported the PM’s rotten deal last time as I felt we could then draw a line and select a new PM to pick up the pieces.
“But I cannot support this convoluted mess. That it takes us towards a rigged referendum between her deal and no Brexit is just grotesque. The PM must go.”
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has rejected Mrs May’s latest offering before the fourth meaningful vote in June even took place.
