BBC's new drama, Showtrial, will fill the gap Bodyguard left in your life

The Christmas festivities may be in full swing but we’re already turning our attention to 2020’s viewing schedule. Amongst the return of many of your favourite TV shows, there are some very exciting new additions that will ensure Netflix and (actual) chill is a continuing trend of 2020.

What’s at the top of our list? Showtrial, BBC’s explosive new crime drama that’s been dubbed the new Bodyguard. Sure, you’ve heard that comparison before only to be left disappointed, but we have a sneaky feeling this might be the real deal. Why? Because it’s from the same producers of the series and popular police drama, Line of Duty.

The six-part drama centres on the court case of a wealthy entrepreneur’s daughter who is arrested after the sudden disappearance of her fellow student. Taking place in the courtroom, Showtrial tracks her trial from the initial arrest to the final verdict, jumping between the defence’s perspective and the prosecution.

Is she guilty? Is she being falsely accused? That’s the question you’ll be asking as the show has you desperately torn between the two.

With themes of politics and prejudice in court cases, Showtrial explores ‘how they can be distorted by other factors, in a world where concepts such as fairness, doubt and reason are afforded such diminishing value,’ according to creator and writer Ben Richards.

“In Showtrial, Ben shows his powers as an independent thinker and an innovative storyteller, and we are delighted to be working with he and Simon Heath to bring this series to BBC One,” said BBC One drama controller, Piers Wenger.

While we await a release date and cast details, check out our edit of the best crime dramas. From Criminal to A Confession, they’re guaranteed to have you gripped from the outset. Just don’t blame us for your sleepless nights.
