BBC Radio 1xtra Live show at Arena Birmingham stopped after man assaulted backstage


A Radio 1Xtra Live show in Birmingham has been stopped tonight after a man was assaulted backstage.

The event was being held at the Arena Birmingham, featuring performers including Nigerian singer Wizkid and London rapper Ms Banks.

A spokesman for the BBC said: “Following an isolated serious incident, we have had to stop 1Xtra Live in Birmingham.

“We are co-operating fully with the police to establish what has happened.”

West Midlands Police released a statement shortly after midnight saying: “Security @ArenaBirmingham alerted police to an assault which took place in the backstage area at 10pm on Saturday.

“It’s understood that a man sustained a slash wound during the assault. He was treated by on site medical staff and did not require hospital treatment.”

Emergency services were seen rushing to the arena as the show was brought to a sudden halt

Police vans and ambulances were quick to arrive after emergency calls were made at around 10pm

Police have appealed for witnesses, saying: “Anyone with information can contact West Midlands Police via Live Chat at http://west-midlands.police.uk 8am – midnight, or call 101 anytime.

“To remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Please quote crime number 20BW/236014J/19.”

 

Ambulances and police cars were seen arriving at the scene, as crowds began making their way for the doors amid mass confusion.

The line-up for BBC Radio 1Xtra Live line-up featured Aitch, French Montana, Jaykae, Lil Tecca, Ms Banks and Popcaan.

Revellers were seen brawling at the venue shortly before reports of a stabbing elsewhere in the venue surfaced

Women were seen falling to the floor as a massive fight broke out at the venue earlier in the evening

Reports suggest the show was brought to an unexpected halt roughly 40 minutes early, with at least two acts still to perform.

Fans took to Twitter to express their outrage at the stoppage, with one saying: “FUMING CANCELLED THE SHOW HALF WAY THROUGH!! Still had acts to see!”.

According to Channel 5 presenter Will Njobvu, headline act WizKid’s performance was one of those cancelled due to the show being abruptly shut down.

The event was also hit with reports of violence throughout the night, with images emerging of fights breaking out and revellers thrown to the ground.

In one video, a large group of women can be seen brawling, with some falling over during the altercation.
